U.S. Tracks Afghan Cash Flow Using Google Earth and GPS
As the war in Afghanistan continues to lurch forward, U.S. and Western coalition forces are increasingly implementing initiatives to help impoverished Afghans pick themselves up and get on the road to economic recovery. Among these programs is "cash-for-work," a set of projects run by NATO and U.S. development organizations, whereby organizations give money to local communities for creating employment opportunities and funding reconstruction. The biggest problem with cash-for-work, though, is accountability and making sure that the money handed out is going toward its intended purpose. Keeping constant tabs on cash flows is always difficult, and especially in a country as factious and war-torn as Afghanistan. But, John Stephens of U.S. charity Mercy Corps recently came up with a nifty solution based on GPS technology and Google Earth.
Because many regions in Afghanistan are still too dangerous for foreigners to enter, Stephens and his team dispatch Afghan staff members, equipped with GPS cameras, in order to provide photographic evidence of the commissioned projects' being undertaken. Once the photos are taken, the data is uploaded to a Google Earth-like program so that Mercy Corps can keep track of the projects, and pay wages accordingly. As Stephens tells Wired, these kinds of watertight accountability measures are paramount in Afghanistan, since "the moment you turn away for a second, that's when corruption can blossom... especially with cash-for-work, because there's so much money involved."

PrePeat Desktop Printer Can Erase/Write Documents
PrePeat is a printer that uses a special thermal head and plastic sheets to print and erase documents allowing you to cut down on paper usage in the office.
The printer uses special paper made of plastic to print on and each sheet can be used up to 1,000 times allowing a document to be printed and then erased when finished with.
The PrePeat Printer is not cheap though and will set you back about $5,517 at today’s exchange rate with the paper costing $3,300 for a pack of 1,000 sheets.
The upside is that users won’t need to buy any consumables other than paper to keep the printer running. Although at the current price tag, the PrePeat printer isn’t targeted at home users, it might appeal to those who plan to print a lot of temporary documents such as small businesses. Also, if the concept and product prove to be popular then prices could drop in the future to more reasonable for home users.
16GB Card from Kingston Starts Shipping
Kingston are shipping a class 10 microSDHC memory card that has a 16GB capacity. The microSDHC card is capable of transferring data at 10MB/second allowing it to be used in DSLR cameras that capture fast images.
The “Class” status’ given to memory cards indicates the speed at which data can be transferred to and from. For example, a Class 2 card can transfer data at 2MB/s while a Class 10 card can transfer at 10MB/s. The higher the class the faster data can be transferred to and from.
“With the new speed class, host devices such as high-definition cameras or the latest smartphones are being designed to optimize their write performance to take advantage of the more responsive memory card speeds,” said Wendy Lecot, Flash card business manager, Kingston®. “Now that the Class 10 card specification is five times faster than a Class 2 card, users will see swifter copying and transferring of photos, music, videos and e-books when using a multi-format card reader such as the Kingston Media Reader or MobileLiteG2 with a PC.
LED Water Bottle
Light and water, the two main things us humans and other forms of life require to stay alive. This bottle aims to ensure you get your light and water in one go.
So then, what is an LED water bottle I hear you ask? It is a bottle, with lights in it. The LED light is built into the drinking carton but don't be put off by that age old problem of battery acid getting into your drink! The solar panel, battery and LED are completely sealed to ensure you don't get any contamination problems!
This drinking vessel will light up for many hours on a single charge. There are two LED's which you can switch between depending on your requirements. If you want to be able to see where you have the left the bottle then change to the red LED. If you want some light in your area then change to the white LED. The battery will last a lot longer if you are using the red LED as it draws a lot less power. The white LED will not last as long because it is very bright and draws a lot of power. On one charge with the white LED on it will last 8-10 hours which is enough for one night camping.
The specifications are as follows:
Optimus Maximus Keyboard
Introducing the Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard. This could be one of the most pointless items we have reviewed here on Pointless But Cool. I still want one. So, what is it I hear you ask? Well, it's a standard keyboard with a difference. Each button contains a little screen.
The keyboard connects to your PC via USB and is configured through the included software. You can choose what graphic you want on each button for specific applications and integrate some of the tools in some programs.
The keyboard has 113 buttons, each with it's little screen. Imagine the hours of fun you could have with that, sat in a dark room..
I would like to try and teach someone to type in a room with the sun streaming through the windows and all the lights on, then we will see what this beast can do, if anything in those conditions.
If you are partial to the odd game of solitaire or one of those weird shooting games then this could be of use. But, I think paying almost a grand for a keyboard is a bit excessive when you could just print out some stickers and shove em' on a cheapy old keyboard.
IDAPT Compact Charging Stations
rying to manage all of those chargers, this IDAPT charging station can handle a few of your gadgets at once. It’d at least make your desktop a whole lot less cluttered. You’ll still have just as many gadgets on your desk, but they’ll look a little more organized sitting on this charger than they would scattered all about. Plus this’ll help free up space as far as your outlets go.
The i2 and i3 models are two different sizes. The i2 will accommodate two of your gadgets, whereas the i3 has three different ports. When you purchase one you’ll also receive six popular charging tips. If out of those tips you don’t find what you need, there are twenty-two available, so you can always order a different one. Through those available tips, they’ll apparently take care of 3,500 different gadgets. The charging station can also handle your rechargeable batteries. You can purchase one for £20 or about $30. As for the i3, it will cost you £30 or about $45.
Gloves with LED Lights performing multiple tasks
There is no shortage of gadgets trying to offer mechanics hands-free lighting while they’re attempting to fix a car. Be it lights with magnets attached or lights that are capable of wrapping around and clinging to items underneath the hood. Now you can even own a pair of mechanics gloves that have LED lights built directly into the pointer finger.
I haven’t decided if these lights would be helpful or make you crazy. By no means does it seem as if they’d be good to replace one of those magnetic lights. However, keeping them on might make it possible to get light into areas when your hands are in the way. The lights will either make you nauseous from them moving around every time you turn a wrench or make it easier to find that bolt that slipped through your fingers. You can purchase the gloves for $22.95 through Amazon.
Army Day of Tajikistan
Tajikistan's armed forces consist of Land Forces, Mobile Forces, Air and Air Defense Forces, Presidential National Guard, and Security Forces (internal and border troops). There are also significant Russian forces in the country principally the 201st Motor Rifle Division.
Unlike the other former Soviet states of Central Asia, Tajikistan did not form armed forces based upon former Soviet units on its territory. Instead, the Russian Ministry of Defence took control of the Dushanbe-based 201st Motor Rifle Division; actually control simply shifted from the former district headquarters in Tashkent, which was in now-independent Uzbekistan, to Moscow. Also present in the country was a large contingent of Soviet border guards, which transitioned into a Russian-officered force with Tajik conscripts. For a long period a CIS peacekeeping force, built round the 201st MRD, was in place in the country.
Due to the presence of Russian forces in the country and the Civil war in Tajikistan, Tajikistan only formally legalised the existence of its armed forces in April 1994.[1]
The armed forces were during the 1990s often poorly commanded, mostly badly disciplined, and with their equipment under-maintained. Draft-dodging and desertion was commonplace. Reflecting the fragmented militia group origin of the army’s units, in late 1995 the Mahmud (1st) and Faisali (11th) Brigades of the Army exchanged fire several times, and fighting again broke out between the Army Rapid Reaction Brigade (formerly the Mahmud Brigade) and the Presidential Guard in June 1996. Colonel Khudoiberdiev, commander of the Rapid Reaction Brigade was relieved of his command
Clipboard gadget makes Coaching hi-tech
comes designer Gordon Yeh’s game clipboard that utilizes the newly developed technology known as “E-Ink” to create a digital clipboard for hi-tech coaching on the sidelines.
If you’ve ever seen sports caster John Madden draw on the video replay to show what he thinks a play can be, then you rather get the idea what could be in the future for coaches.
Called the E-ink Electronic Coaching Playboard, this clipboard can be used for drawing plays, sketching out strategies, even examining images and criticizing them with electronic writing straight on top.
The design would come with a choice of different pre-loaded sports templates including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, et al. And with the animation feature, directions can be replayed and rehearsed to perfection.
No word on when this will be available. E-Ink is still a conceptual technology. But should it catch on (it may be Newspaper’s saving grace), then ancillary technologies like this one could become reality.
HP expands digital imaging category of devices
HP, the world’s top computer maker, has just introduced five more point-and-shoot digital cameras alongside a trio of camcorders for the masses, where they will come with a range of features including LCD displays, up to 5X optical zoom and fashionable colors. Among the digital cameras and camcorders on offer, selected models will boast touchscreen LCD displays for that added touch of modernization. With a new intuitive user interface to make things even more idiot proof than ever before, you will also find that a high color contrast does a whole lot in helping one experience better visibility when browsing through menus and faced with a choice of more than 25 scene modes to snap the best quality images possible.
Take for instance when you select a scene mode – the display will show off a couple of images, where one is how the photo will look in auto mode while the other depicts how it looks in the selected scene mode. This offers one the ability to make the best shooting choice possible thanks to this smart preview option, but it ought to cause a hit on one’s battery life in the long run, not to mention being slower in snapping photos since you will need to do a double take each time round. As for the premium HP CW450t and HP PW460t point-and-shoot digital cameras, they come with a 2.7″ and 3″ LCD touchscreen displays, respectively, alongside a newly designed touch interface, sharing a 4X optical zoom and SDHC memory cards. You will need to fork out $109 for the CW450t, while the PW460t is going for $149.
As for the newest HP touchscreen digital camcorders, the V5061u and V5560u will come with easy-to-view 3″ LCD touchscreen displays, 1,080p high-definition (HD) recording and motion-detection capabilities. Not only that, the V5560u goes one up with 5X optical zoom and a lithium-ion battery, while the V5061u relies on the SDHC memory card format to store all of your favorite digital memories. Should the lithium-ion battery remain uncharged, there is always the alternative of shoving in AA batteries to keep the camcorder running. Interested? The V5560u and V5061u will retail for $199 and $169, respectively.
Faux Panning Security Camera
Keeping people out of your property can sometimes be as simple as giving the illusion of security. Even if you can’t afford a top of the line security system, this fake one looks real enough to fool most people. It might be overkill for most homes, but small businesses could definitely use them. They could even be used to get people to quit breaking into your garage.
These cameras will even scan back and forth. Only after they detect movement do they start to move around, which will conserve their battery life. There’s also a red blinking LED light to make it seem as if the camera is recording. When you purchase the set you’ll get a mounting kit that includes wood screws and a mounting bracket. Each one of these cameras will cost you $59.95 through Hammacher Schlemmer.

Microsoft Outlook to Add MySpace and Facebook Integration
Microsoft Outlook has just become a lot more social through new partnerships with Facebook and MySpace and an existing one with LinkedIn.
You might remember back in November that Microsoft announced Outlook Social Connector, a new Office 2010 feature that hooks up social feeds into the Outlook inbox. The initial partner for the program was LinkedIn, whose business connections, alerts and messages would integrate directly with Outlook.
Now that integration has gone live. Outlook users can now download LinkedIn for Outlook and transform their desktop inboxes into a hub for all things LinkedIn.
Overshadowing its release is Microsoft’s announcement of two big partners for the Outlook Social Connector, MySpace and Facebook. Sometime in the next few months, users will be able to check up on their MySpace friends, update their Facebook status and browse through photos.
While it’s unclear just how deep this integration will go, it’s clearly a win for Outlook and Microsoft. While Google’s Gmail service now boasts Google Buzz, Microsoft can counter that with LinkedIn, MySpace, and Facebook, all of which are more widely used than Buzz.
Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Laptop Mouse
I didn’t realize what a difference a good mouse can make in your computing experience until I got one. Wow. Using a mouse that is comfortable to rest your hand on and accurate in its pointing is a big big deal. And if the mouse is wireless… all the better… especially if you are using it in place of a laptop’s tiny trackpad.
Well our GearSponsor tracked down a great buy on a Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse. Offering “Laser Precision; Hyper-fast scrolling; Ergonomic design” the VX Nano has an MSRP of $69.99 but with this deal the price is just $26.99. Sure the packaging is a bit banged up but the mouse is brand new and you’ll just throw the box away anyhow… right??
Logitech G27 Racing Wheel!
The Logitech G27 racing wheel is the follow up to Logitech’s wonderful G25 racing wheel that came out a few years back. It is developed mainly for the hardcore gamers who love to experience every bit of the game, and play it in true sense. It is designed to provide the best racing experience to the PlayStation gaming station users and PC gamers. Having used the G25 in the past, I would say I am a very happy owner of the fantastic G25 racing wheel made by Logitech. The G27 racing wheel from Logitech is everything a racing simulation fan would ever want; leather-clad steering wheel, two motors for force feedback, manual gearbox, with clutch pedal.
3-D Printer: Unfold Goes Ceramic
With reasonably priced 3-D printers hitting the market, and DIY versions becoming more prevalent, we're now entering a very exciting time in which designers are experimenting with the materials they send through their extruders. We wrote back in November about Belgian design outfit Unfold and the Utanalog teapot it displayed at the Bits 'n Pieces Exhibition. Now,Unfold has successfully used its 3-D printer to print an earthen vessel from powdered ceramic material. One of 3-D printing's benefits is the ability to mold objects that would be difficult or otherwise impossible to create using previous manufacturing methods. (AMT Studio previously explained to us how creating a ball-within-a-ball for their Jointed Pieces would have been inconceivable without 3-D printing.) So, Unfold decided to test reconstituted ceramic powder on a double-walled vessel with small buttresses between the layers. Check out a gallery after the break to see Unfold's process.
Double the Shaving Power rolling razer
A while back I told you about the Headblade, which is a razor that assists those of use who choose to keep our heads completely clean of hair either by choice or not.
The Rolling Razor is another celebrity endorsed razor, but this one’s meant for both men and women and is meant to be used anywhere on your body, not just the head. The sleek-looking razor slips over your finger tips and has two blades allowing you to move it in any direction while shaving.
The razor features an “innovative handle and unique Dual Rounded Cartridge System, for the closest and fastest possible multi-directional shave. Access even the hardest to reach areas – face, head and body, you’re always in control.”
The Rolling Razor takes specially designed blades but the company offers 5 different blade types: Regular, Sensitive, Extra Sensitive, Bump Eliminator and Severe Bump Eliminator. The blades cost less than standard store-bought blades too.
The Rolling Razor comes with a 30-day money back guarantee so why not give it a whirl. I recently received mine and used it for the first time today. I like the shave a lot and will be using it over the next week to see if it remains my daily driver.

HTC Smart – Qualcomm Brew Based Low Cost Smartphone
HTC has launched another smartphone, although this one is aimed at the budget smartphone sector, the HTC Smart. The HTC Smart is based on Qualcomm’s Brew mobile platform, and it will feature the latest version of HTC’s custom users interface, the Sense UI.
The HTC Smart will come with a 300MHz Qualcomm processor, and it features a 2.8 inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.
Other specifications include 256MB of memory, and storage is provided by a microSD card slot. There is also a three megapixel camera, and it will offer single-band 2100MHz HSDPA 3G and quad band GSM?GPRS/Edge connectivity.
One thing the HTC smart is missing is WiFi, obviously to keep the cost down, it does come with Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP stereo audio. According to HTC battery life comes in at four hundred and fifty minutes of talk time on GSM, and a standby battery life of six hundred hours.
The Brew mobile platform mainly uses Flash for applications, Flash 3.1 Lite, and there will be a number of applications available when the HTC Smart goes on sale.
The HTC Smart will be available in the UK in April with mobile phone provider O2, there are no details on pricing as yet, although it shouldn’t be that expensive considering it is designed as a budget smartphone.

Facebook Releasing Zero Image Free Mobile Version and Integrates Facebook Gmail Chrome Extension
Think of social networking websites and the very first name that pops up in our mind is Facebook, which was launched back in February 2004, and since then it has undergone many changes to cope up with the requirements and expectations of its users, arising during the various phases of its life span of six years and counting. One of such notable feature was Facebook lite, that was launched for the users located in US and India but hold on, the latest buzz suggests that Facebook will go one step further this time, with the introduction of Facebook Zero. The official announcement is imminent!
The news came into (web) light following the 20 minute keynote in the ongoing event in Barcelona (yes we are talking about Mobile World Congress) given by Chamath Palihapitiya, VP of Growth, Mobile and International at Facebook, that it will soon launch even lighter (i.e. image free) version of Facebook in the form of Facebook Zero. Basically it is a new version of m.facebook.com (as confirmed by Facebook) which will tear down data intensive applications like Photos. Huh, that was easy to predict judging by the new name. No?
Seems like the launch of Google Buzz (remember the location aware browsing phenomena) is the main reason propelling facebook to zero in on its own version for mobile. My guess, it will be a webapp for mobile, just likeGoogle had it for iPhone and Android users at buzz.google.com. What’s your view?
The latest version of the Facebook can be found at zero.facebook.com, but there is nothing spectacular as of now to try. When you land up at the above address on your mobile browser, it will notify you that your carrier is not supported. Don’t blame your carrier (and calling the carrier helpline would not do any favor) since there have been no confirmations from Facebook towards any deal whatsoever with any carrier so far. Surely, things are picking up the pace in the background. Expect more updates from carriers/Facebook, very soon. So in case you had rolled up your sleeves to make the hell out of the latest development, now you know what to do. Wait and for the time being, just roll back your sleeves. Just kidding!
