Coulomb partners with Ford, Chevy, Smart to deliver 4,600 free EV charging stations in US

Friday, June 4, 2010 by Aazar Shahzad

Looks like Australia and Poland were just the beginning: Coulomb Technologies is looking to roll out nearly 5,000 electric vehicle charging stations in the US, effective immediately. If one of those cherry-red push pins is pointed at your neighborhood, you'll likely see the stations popping up at local businesses soon, and if you're looking to purchase a Chevy Volt, Tesla-powered Smart or one of Ford'stwo new EVs, you can even qualify to have a free station installed in your home. Partially paid for by a $15 million grant from the Department of Energy, the ChargePoint America program won't necessarily give you free electricity to go with it -- that "charge" in ChargePoint has a double meaning, after all -- but we're happy to see the zero-emissions future is finally on a roll. PR after the break.

Just in case you were wondering where and when you might get a taste of the Optimus elixir, NVIDIA has handed us a detailed list of Computex debutants that will be taking the graphics switching technology with them to retail. A total of sixteen new Optimus machines are on show in Taipei, and although ASUS is still the biggest purveyor (with six SKUs, not counting previously announced products), Lenovo and Acer have also jumped on board, with the IdeaPad Y460 and a pair of Packard Bell EasyNotes, respectively. Notably, the FX700 above from MSI is marked as using an "unannounced" next-gen graphics chip, which we suspect might be the GTX 460M, a mobile GPU that NVIDIA is showing, but not talking about yet. Guess that'll be slotting in just below the recently unveiled GTX 480M. We've got pictorial evidence of the 460M's existence after the break, along with the full list of new Optimus-ized machines.

Lenovo Y460 (14", GeForce 330M GPU, 1GB)

HP ZR30w has 30 inches of IPS goodness, 1.07 billion colors, and a price to match

by Aazar Shahzad

You've seen the affordable end of the IPS scale, now how about something gluttonously extravagant? HP is refreshing its Performance Display line with the new ZR30w, a 30-inch S-IPS panel whose 1.07 billion colors comfortably cover 100 percent of the sRGB and 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color ranges. That makes a compelling argument for those who place color accuracy high on their list of priorities, and there's also a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution to tempt folks tired of 16:9 display ratios. The minimal bezel and brushed aluminum design finish off the appealing package, but there's one hurdle most of us won't be able to overcome: a $1,299 sticker. As if to illustrate the eternal proverb that you get what you pay for, HP is also bringing out a pair of dirt cheap Compaq monitors today, but you'll have to skip past the break to see them and their spec sheets.

Sony's VAIO W Billabong hits US shores June 11th, $500 buys you a ride

by Aazar Shahzad

Remember the boardshort-inspired VAIO W Billabong netbook that surfaced in Australia last week? The limited edition lappy's headed stateside, too, and its Imperial Lime lid and faster 1.83GHz Atom N470CPU will only cost you $50 more than the stock model. Mind you, this is otherwise the same pricy VAIO W that wasn't worth five Benjamins last fall, but if you're the type that dreams of barreling down a tunnel of deep blue ocean nightly, we suppose the occasional concession can't hurt. Now available for preorder via the source link, the mini-notebook ships June 11th; PR after the break.

Eton Soulra iPod sound system is rugged, splash-proof and solar-powered

by Aazar Shahzad

Solar-powered sound systems are certainly nothing new, but Etón has taken things a bit further than most with its new Soulra system, which not only adds an iPhone / iPod dock to the equation, but wraps it in a rugged, splash-proof enclosure. That obviously makes it better suited for the beach or pool-side than some other options, but you'll also naturally get an AC adapter and line-in to use it at home and connect other audio devices. Not much else in the way of technical specs just yet, unfortunately, but it looks like it should be available in the coming days for $199 -- Etón actually says "now," but most retailers seem to be saying otherwise. Full press release is after the break.
