Apple hires NFC expert to manage mobile commerce, prepare to pay with your iPhone

Don't look now, but things may be getting real on the pay-with-your-cell-phone front, as Cupertino's hired a man with years of experience in enabling just that to finally get 'er done. According to his LinkedIn profile, Benjamin Vigier is Apple's new Product Manager of Mobile Commerce, immediately following his handiwork on PayPal Mobile, Sprint MyMoneyManager and the iPhone-based Starbucks Card. Before that, he spent two years heading SanDisk's mobile commerce and near-field communication efforts and over a year doing NFC for Bouygues Telecom, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine the futuristic concert tickets depicted in Apple's recent patent applications might become reality before long. Either that, or he'll wind up on a completely unrelated project, only to leave under mysterious circumstances later on.

The Motorola Droid 2 is launching tomorrow, but we see in the picture here that one looks to already be available although it isn't clear if this particular DROID 2 has left the store it was pictured in. We suspect it hasn't been given to a customer just yet because we see a second DROID 2 box in the corner indicating a batch arrived ready for launch tomorrow.

Either way, it's real and ready for launch tomorrow along with a new QWERTY keyboard and sporting Android 2.2 Froyo.

If you want to order one, you can head on over to the Verizon online store where you can pick up the phone for $199.99 on a 2 year contract.

Apple Event Coming Mid September

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

Apple [AAPL] will be holding an annual event mid-September according to AllThingsD.

This particular event has been held every year since 2005 and is expected to run next month. Items expected to be announced are the new iPod touch 4 with the Retina Display and the dual cameras for FaceTime. There is also the possibility that the iPod touch could get the A4 processor like the iPhone 4 currently has. With the higher resolution screen being mentioned, we suspect that the innards will also get spruced up a little.

Another rumour mentioned includes Apple TV and we might hear which direction Apple is going with Apple TV.

Something not mentioned at AllThingsD is iOS 4 for the iPad. We don't have an iPad iOS 4 release date yet and all we know is that it will be landing in the fall of this year, which is right around the time this Apple event might happen. If it hasn't appeared by that time, we hope an announcement along with a date will follow soon after.

iTunes cloud is also expected to be mentioned although this rumour keeps surfacing with not much about it at the moment.

We'll keep our eyes open on this one and let you know what happens.

iOS 4.0.2 iPhone 3G Unlock Still Works

by Aazar Shahzad

With the release of iOS 4.0.2 last night, it raises the questions of jailbreaking and unlocking the new version. From what we understand, iOS 4.0.2 uses the same baseband as 4.0.1 and can therefore be unlocked. However, you need to be able to jailbreak your iPhone to apply the unlock which is where the problem is now since Apple [AAPL] closed the security hole that jailbreakme.com used to jailbreak the phone.

The current iPhone 4 jailbreak was broken with the iOS 4.0.2 update which means that if you want a jailbroken iPhone 4, you'll need to leave it on 4.0.1 or on previous versions. The same goes for the iPhone 3GS.However, if you updated your iPhone 3G to iOS 4.0.2 then you are still in luck as you can still use Redsn0w to jailbreak your iOS 4.0.2 iPhone 3G.When you have jailbroken your iPhone 3G, you just need to grab Ultrasn0w and unlock the phone with it.It is unlikely that jailbreakme.com will be updated to use one of several security holes available until iOS 4.1 is launched. We expect that Apple will be launching the next iOS shortly as it is currently in beta 3 form and getting closer now
