Did You Know? iOS 4.2.x Brings Japanese-only Benefit

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

A little known fact about Apple’s latest iOS update for iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads: When iPads were first sold exclusively in the US, with international launches being pushed back time and again for lack of stock, some hardcore people in Japan bought US-market iPads and imported them with the intent to use them in Japan. Doing this, though, was actually illegal under Japanese law: all electronic devices with antennas needed to carry a Technical Conformity Certification from the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) – not just be certified, actually carry the Certification logo – on the body of the device itself. iPhone 3Gs and 3GSs sold in Japan have this certification, at the bottom of the back. iPads sold in the US, somewhat unsurprisingly, do not.

Last March, the MIC issued a press release announcing a revision to the portion of Japanese telecom law to allow the “easily seen” display of the Certification logo to include electromagnetic methods of display, e.g. a video screen. This means that even if a hardware device was manufactured prior to it receiving a certification, or even if it was manufactured intended for a market outside Japan, it can still be used legally inside the country as long as its software can display the relevant Certification logo, such as on an About page. Thus, people who imported non-Japanese iPads are now on the straight and narrow side of the law, with no fear of being slapped with the 2M JPY fine and public flogging for toting a non-Certification-logo-branded wireless device.

Of course, this still meant that imported iPads and iPhone 4s would still be illegal under Japanese law, as they don’t come with the Certification logo engraved on its casing and the software would not display it; that’s where iOS 4.2.x comes in. The latest update finally displays the Japanese regulatory certification logo in Settings > General > About > Regulatory, making them usable in Japan as well. Enter Japan Communications Inc. With the iPad update finally making non-Japanese iPads legal in Japan, the country’s first and most famous mobile virtual network operator has announced that they will start offering a SIM card and contract for imported non-SIM-locked iPads.

One more interesting bit: A Japanese blogger who got a for-Japan iPhone 4 at an Apple Store noticed that his new Apple product doesn’t have an MIC Certification logo, instead sporting an FCC and EU certification; he asked his readers to specify if their iPhone 4s had the MIC certification or not, and received responses for 97 iPhone 4s: forty of them didn’t have a Japanese certification logo, but fifty-seven did, completely destroying my hypothesis that Apple decided simply to take advantage of the rewritten MIC rules and forgo engraving the Japanese certification on their devices at all. This mix of different certifications raises the theory that some of these iPhone 4s – or at least, the rear plates – were originally manufactured for non-Japanese markets, and for some reason, were rerouted here. Which further raises the question: if it’s the entire phone that was unexpectedly brought to Japan, and not just the rear plate, and it carries a certification from a country where SIM locking is illegal, is the phone not SIM-locked?

7-inch iPad 2 to have USB port?

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

A Chinese paper, the Economic Daily News, is reporting that production has started on 7-inch iPads due for release in Q1 2011. The paper also details some of the new features to expect in the iPad successor, including front and rear facing cameras, and a USB port for connecting external devices.

The report also alluded to new screen and touch technologies but did not elaborate on what these technologies would be. Could it be that Apple has circumvented its issues with our fat fingers by employing a new and more sensitive touchscreen tech?

This is far from the first iPad 2 rumours we've heard, and the Q1 timing isn't too great a stretch of the imagination when you consider that Apple is likely to update the product line 12 months after it released the original. It should be noted also that the Economic Daily News was one of the first news sources to predict that Apple was developing a tablet at all.

Sony introduces a New Vaio P with accelerometer and PS3 Remote Play.

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

Sony introduces this morning, a new Vaio P, a completely remade from ground-up Vaio P, designed to bring way more versatility to the already sexy Vaio P. The basic model comes with an Atom Z530 (1.60GHz) or an Atom Z560 (2.13GHz) on Order made ones, with 2GB of RAM, 64GB of SSD and an Intel SCH US15W chipset offering a nice 1600×768 resolution on 8” monitor. Our new Vaio P comes with WiMax, WiFi ABGN, Bluetooth a 0.31Mpix Camera with a total weight of 619g. The new Vaio P also introduces a new touch sensitive trackpad on the right side of its monitor. To spice up things a little more, Sony will offer the Vaio P in 5 different colors as well as a “Crocodile” skin.

But the design and specs change are not the most important aspect of this new release and Sony with this new Vaio P brings the PS3 Remote play to its Vaio Line-up (The Vaio P will be the first to carry the PS3 Remote Play). If you own a PS3 with the latest firmware (3.30) you will be capable to access to your PS3 contents and even recorded TV programs from the comfort of your Vaio P. The new Vaio P also brings something quite new over at SONY, with the usage of an accelerometer that will tilt your screen accordingly and will further enhanced its GPS function, or to even let you jump from one picture to another in a sideshow via a simple tilt.

Anyway, like usual we will have to wait to have this baby in hands in order to fully appreciate its new features.

Dell Vostro V13 Core 2 Solo

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

Adamo laptops are among the sexiest machine available on Dell Catalog, but like every high-end goods, price is an obstacle difficult to overcome for most of us… And when Dell decided to offer a Cheap Adamo, the Vostro V13, we decided that we had to give it a try and found out if our 69,980 Yen Vostro V13 was a pretty good deal after all. Just to let you know Dell Japan as nice offer for a Vista and Celeron 743 powered Vostro V13 at just 12,980 Yen (106€).

Dell Vostro V13 Specs:
- Intel CoreTM 2 Solo SU3500 @ 1.40 GHz
- 2 GB DDR3 SDRAM (1066 MHz)
- Intel GMA 4500MHD
- 320 GB Serial ATA 7,200 rpm
- 13.3” HDF LED Backlight Monitor with a 1366×768 resolution.

First Impression
Directly coming from the Adamo family the Vostro V13 inherit for its big brother handsomeness and quality build. Like the Adamo the Vostro V13 peculiarity reside in the way you will close your computer screen and lid, lying on top of your computer bottom deck.
Receiving an elegant brushed aluminum lid and bottom body, the V13 over all quality is matching our expectation. Add to this a well design and elegant keyboard and mouse pad, the Vostro V13 is just the elegant Business oriented Laptop that many of us would die for.
Minimalistic the V13 is in the other hands a bit means with peripheral. Don’t expect much here but the V13 only features a USB 2.0 port and an e-SATA one. If you are looking forward to plug your computer to your nice 24” Full HD Monitor you will have to do it the good old fashion way with the poor man D-Sub output.
Luckily Dell also thought that it could be nice to add 2 more slot with a SD Card reader and an Express Card/34 port on the side of your computer ant that pretty much it.
Looking forward to enjoy HD video on the Go? You are in luck, since the Vostro V13 features a pretty nice none glossy 13.3” screen with a 1366×768 resolution

Everyday usage.
Unfortunately only available in Japan with a Celeron 743 or a Core 2 Solo SU3500, the Vostro V13 is far from being as powerful as an Adamo, at least for us in Japan, but the good news is that it will just do what it is suppose to do! Now let’s face it, and even if you would have better enjoyed a Core 2 Duo S7300 like on the USA V13 for example, the Vostro V13 has never been made to compete against power user oriented laptop, but has been targeted to business oriented user, where a Core 2 Solo SU3500 with a 7200rpm HDD will easily handle Web Browsing, Email, Basic Office usage and even some basic photo edition even with Photoshop.
If you ever wanted to push the limit of your Business oriented usage and just need to relax for while, reset assure, the Vostro V13 even on its Core 2 Solo configuration will easily handle Hulu Video, as well as HD videos. As for 3D video gaming, well let’s say that Intel’s GMA 4500MHD won’t give you the needed power to play those 3D heavy games, but once again, who will be crazy enough to try such games on such tiny and slim Business laptop whether or not you could get it with a Core 2 Duo CPU.

So far so good, the Vostro V13 is a pretty nice business tool, well built, nice aluminum casing an ultra slim with just 19.7mm, the Vostro has for me everything it needs when it comes for a slim & elegant mobile professional laptop… But as a mobile device, the Vostro has just one weakness… Its battery. Unfortunately unswappable, the Vostro V13 will need to go back to DELL support center if you ever need to change its internal battery, we actually were not capable to remove the computer aluminum bottom without damaging the computer… Bad very bad.

Conclusion.
Despite its poor choice of CPU in Japan, I would die for a Core 2 Duo V13, its unswappable battery, I would still get the V13 in addition on of me setting at the office. Actually using a Vaio G2 series in a Windows Server and Exchange Office environment, The V13 will perform just as well as my G2 Core 2 Duo 1.2Ghz plus giving me the satisfaction to own an excellently build computer and on top of that a very elegant one. And as proof, while writing this review I just placed an order for a Vostro V13 with a Core 2 Solo at 23,450 Yen (196€) to replace my Wife Lenovo 3000 N100 Core Duo 1.66Ghz Laptop.

Expect iPad 2 from Apple next April, says analyst

Wednesday, November 24, 2010 by Aazar Shahzad
Share

Apple will roll out a second-generation iPad next April, a year after the original's launch, a Wall Street analyst said today.

According to Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co., Apple will take an annual refresh path for its tablet, just as it has for the iPhone, which has seen new models introduced in June or July the last three years.

"I think April is the proper time-frame for an iPad 2," said Marshall, using a label that's been bandied about for the next iteration of Apple's tablet. "Since I'm projecting that Apple will release a CDMA iPhone in March, both will help to equalize Apple's seasonality."

Marshall's comment about a CDMA iPhone refers to reports, as well as his sources among Asian parts suppliers, that Apple will launch an iPhone next March able to run on mobile networks such as Verizon in the U.S.

AT&T, Apple's current exclusive partner in the United States, relies on the more widely-used GSM (global system for mobile communications) technology.

Analysts and bloggers have been speculating on the composition of the next-generation iPad -- everything from a thinner form factor to a higher-resolution display -- but Marshall said the second iPad will be essentially the same as the first.

With one exception.

"It will be the same form factor, but with dual-camera functionality," said Marshall, echoing others who have bet on two cameras in the next iPad. That would let iPad users run FaceTime, the video calling software Apple rolled out with the iPhone 4 last summer.

Early tear-downs of the original iPad revealed that Apple left room inside the iPad for a front-facing camera. Aaron Vronko of Rapid Repair noted the space during his April disassembly. "It looks like it's all ready for the camera, even including a hole in the glass for the lens," said Vronko.

But don't expect more storage in the iPad 2, warned Marshall. "I don't think we'll see higher-capacity iPads," he said, placing his bet on the same 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations Apple now sells at prices between $499 and $829.

Through the end of September, Apple sold approximately 7.5 million iPads. Marshall anticipates that Apple will sell another 6 million iPads before the end of the year for a 2010 total of 13.5 million.

Dell’s New Tablet Notebook (IDF 2010)

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

Convertible tablet PCs – that is, tablet PCs that can turn into a regular laptop form factor – have traditionally had swivel screens on hinges that work the same way as the swivel screens on Sony’s Alpha DSLRs, for example. There was also one with an awkward sliding mechanism that nobody remembers, but we won’t go into that here. At the Intel Developer Forum being held right now in San Francisco, Dell introduced an upcoming addition to their Inspiron line with a 10-inch netbook that transforms into a tablet PC using a whole new approach. Once you open the lid of the laptop, the screen flips around on an axis halfway down the sides of the display, turning into a clamshell laptop!

The netbook itself has a dual-core Atom processor and runs Windows 7Premium.

AutoBot app tracks your car if it tries to roll without you

Monday, November 22, 2010 by Aazar Shahzad
Share

We smell a Hasbro lawsuit coming with this one, but for now AutoBot is a funky name for a potentially great iPhone and Android app. Working in concert with a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle (not unlike theSuperchips Vivid), it lets you diagnose engine troubles, keep track of maintenance, and locate your car via GPS coordinates -- useful for when some Decepticon tries to make off with your ride or when you're simply running low on energon and can't remember where you parked. It can even be configured to automatically send a text to loved ones should you get into an accident, specifying your GPS coordinates and ruining any hope of hitting the body shop before dad finds out. The Mavizon-developed app recently won a startup competition at i-Stage 2010 and sadly isn't slated to be available until 2012, but we should be getting an early look at CES. When it does ship it'll cost $300 for the hardware and the software, though an extra fee will be required if you want to banish pop-up ads back to Cybertron.

Sony Ericsson CEO suggests February reveal, perhaps the PlayStation Phone?

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

Plausible deniability seems to be Sony's strategy when it comes to the PlayStation Phone, and that apparently goes for Sony Ericsson as well -- once again, without actually confirming the existence of the Android-based gaming handset, its manufacturer is hinting strongly at an impending reveal. "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere," CEO Bert Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal, adding that some sort of new Sony Ericsson product will be unveiled at Mobile World Congressthis February. While that particular item could easily be the 4.3-inch Anzu slate rather than a PlayStation slider phone, the chief executive didn't seem to shy away from video games in a series of additional quotes. "I haven't dug into that history, but the future might be brighter," he said when asked why the company didn't make a PlayStation Phone years ago, and later suggested that gaming might be the ticket to help SE diversify its offerings. "Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn't we use that?" he asked the Journal. We can't think of a single compelling reason, Mr. Nordberg. Bring on the games.

Jolibook now on sale in the UK

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

Looks like Jolicloud knows how to keep a product under wraps -- just ten days after revealing the Jolibook to the world, it's already on sale at a pair of e-tailers. Yes, it's just a netbook, and a fairly standard one at that -- you can cross the 10.1-inch WSVGA screen, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and 0.3 megapixel webcam right off your laundry list. But it does have the instant-on Jolicloud 1.1 OS on board, and a dual-core 1.5GHz Atom N550 processor to power through basic tasks, and for a confirmed £279 (about $443) it would also seem to have a price to match. Find it Vye or Amazon UK if you're already sold, and expect to actually receive it before long -- founder Tariq Krim tweets that orders placed this weekend will ship out Monday morning.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 hands-on

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

The best looking Lenovo IdeaPad ever? Yep, that'd be the U260. Not since the IdeaPad U110 has Lenovo's consumer line been home to a really striking laptop, but the U260's leather-like palmrest, magnesium-aluminum alloy lid and bottom cover change all that. We got a chance to check out the new 12.5-inch laptop a few days ago, and came away seriously impressed with not only its contrasting black and brown aesthetic but its build quality. The entire .7-inch thick frame feels solid and the curved keys, which are similar to those on the U160, are especially delightful. Unfortunately, the model we got to see didn't have the glass trackpad that we've heard about, but our review unit should be here sometime soon. Until we get to put the system's Core i3-380UM processor and 4GB of RAM to the test, hit the gallery below for a few hands-on pictures of it and some crazy platinum, diamond-encrusted U160 that Lenovo brought along.

Titanium Blue PS3 hits Japan on November 25th, long-awaited racing game in tow

November 3rd came and went without a Gran Turismo 5 game to play, so as you'd imagine this gorgeousTitanium Blue PS3 launch bundle also failed to see the light of day. However, now that we've got a totally plausible and twice-confirmed November 24th release date for the little uber-realistic racer that could, it's probably fair to take Sony Japan at its word that we'll see the commemorating console appear without further delay. Tell your Japanese importer to line up on November 25th if you want one with your name on it, and be sure to hand him at least ¥35,980 (about $436) of your rainy day fund.

Nokia E7 hits FCC with as much 3G support as you can handle

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

In our inevitable Utopian future (assuming we make it past this 2012 noise), we'll all use one frequency for our high-speed wireless broadband across the globe. Actually, we'll probably just beam information directly between our brains and brain-like supercomputers at speeds so fast they can't be measured, and we won't need smartphones at all because they'll be installed in our bodies at birth, complete with eyeballs capable of 1080p video capture. Until then, though, we've got companies like Nokia showing some hustle to put pentaband 3G radios on the market, and the trend continues with the upcoming E7. Of course, we already knew it was going to be pentaband -- Nokia had said as much -- but seeing it in the cold, hard graphs and tables of an FCC filing is still music to our ears. Won't be long now, folks.

ASUS' Sandy Bridge motherboards , come with Bluetooth and USB 3.0 as standard

by Aazar Shahzad
Share

We already got an early glimpse at what ASUS is bringing to Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge party, now how about some glamor shots of the actual hardware? The Taiwanese company has taken the shroud of mystery away from its latest range of motherboards and the first thing that stood out to us was the TUF-looking Sabertooth P67 above. It comes with an extended five-year warranty, "military-grade" electrical components, a litany of thermal sensors, and of course that Tactical Jacket up top. Beyond its obvious visual appeal, the Jacket serves to channel airflow throughout the board, aiding the cooling of more peripheral components. On the more diminutive front, ASUS is showing off a Mini-ITX board, the P8P67-I, that fits everything but full-sized RAM slots within a minuscule footprint. Check it out after the break. Oh, and ASUS is sticking USB 3.0 and Bluetooth connectivity on almost all its future boards. Yay!

The NDA is expected to lift on the week beginning December 13th, but it's anyone's guess whether reviews of the cards will be accompanied by widespread in-store availability. This is certainly something you don't see every day. An original Apple-1 computer -- of which only 200 were made -- will go on sale in an auction at Christie's on November 23rd. The computer, which originally cost $666.66 to purchase new, was launched in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, and models were sold out of Jobs' own house (or you know... his parents house). The sale includes everything that was included with the original Apple-1 purchase: an Apple-1 motherboard (number 82), printed circuit board, three capacitors, a heatsink, cassette board connector, 8kb of RAM, and a keyboard interface. Along with the other printed material that comes with the computer is a typed letter from Steve Jobs which appears to be in answer to the original owner's questions. The letter simply says "yep." The Apple-1 is expected to fetch somewhere in the realm of $200,000 to $250,000 at auction.

Were you getting worried that Lenovo was going to pull another ThinkPad Edge 11 and forget to release that dapper IdeaPad U260 in the US of A? Well, set those worries aside -- we just received word (or you know, a press release) that spills all the US pricing and availability details. That's right, the world's first laptop with a 12.5-inch display will be available starting November 15 (that's this coming Monday) for a starting price of $899. But there's more to the .7-inch / 3-pound U260 than its unique screen size -- it's got a glass touchpad option, a "breathable" chiclet keyboard for cooling, and it's the company's first "single piece design made of magnesium-aluminum alloy materials." We don't have details on what you get for the sub-$900 starting price, but the system is available with Core i3-380UM and Core i5-470UM processors, up to 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. We should be getting a closer look at this guy soon, but at least you have the weekend to peruse the pictures and press release below before deciding if you want to hit "Add To Cart" come Monday.

Hulu Plus comes to the Sony Dash, Justin Bieber is so stoked

The Sony Dash gets a bit of a bum wrap. Sure, we wish it was a little more tablet, a little less alarm clock, but Justin Bieber loves his. You know what else The Biebs likes? Cutting cable! Now that Hulu Plus is on his Sony Dash he can totally kick Time Warner to the curb, which is worthy of a trending Twitter topic if we ever saw one. He's too young for HBO, anyway.

The internet is in a tizzy this week, with rumours flying that Apple’s iOS4.2 update will land tomorrow. In what looks like a move to upstage Google, the update is expected to arrive just after Android’s Gingerbread OS upgrade hits Googlephones.

An unnamed source (why are they always without a name these sources) from AT&T in the US toldMacStories that the new iOS update will be available on Friday 12th November, 10PM UAE time.

And there’s more to support the soon-to-be-launched update, Apple sent out an email to developers promising “iOS 4.2 will soon be in the hands of millions of customers”.

The update will bring multitasking and Game Center to the iPad. It will also include a fix to the iPhone’s daylight-saving time alarm issues.

New Facebook for BlackBerry takes on Places

Just last week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stood before a crowd of journalists (including us) andannounced an update of Facebook Places for the iPhone, and the arrival of Facebook Places for Android. Facebook Places, the social network's business listing service, has also just come to BlackBerry.

Facebook 1.9 for BlackBerry has placed Facebook Places as a selection in its navigation strip. Select it, and you're able to check in to a location--like a coffee shop or a concert hall--tag friends, and add an uncharted Place to the listings. There's the full range of management options as well, so you're able to view Places, comment, and view a listing's location on BlackBerry Maps. BlackBerry's internal GPS receiver powers the app's location element.

In addition to Places, Facebook and BlackBerry-maker RIM have also enhanced search, letting you now search for contacts and pages within the app. Software tweaks also plump up the number of items you can view in the news feed and friend list, and the app makes it easier to access your profile, Search, and Messaging from the navigation toolbar.

The new Facebook app also plays well with the Universal Search functionality baked into BlackBerry OS 6.

BlackBerry's version of Facebook has arguably been the weakest Facebook implementation for a mobile platform. The addition of Places certainly helps, as do the navigation tweaks. However, the app still trails Android and especially iPhone in features and functionality.

RIM will roll out updates over the next day, but you can also manually download Facebook for BlackBerry 1.9 free from the App World app on your BlackBerry.

Gravity Gun

This is the number one computer game gadget for a reason. It completely changed the way you played the videogame, making you able to use the environment in a smart way to kill your enemies in imaginative ways. For example, by grabbing a saw and throwing it to an enemy to cut it's head off.

It has been copied in many games (like Bioshock) where the Gravity Gun takes the form of a plasmid power which lets you return fireballs to their owners, lift heavy objects or even solve some complicated puzzles.

I hope that you liked this list of the best computer game gadgets! What's your favorite on this list, or something not mentioned here? Let us know by commenting below!
