Motorola planning 4G devices for Verizon

It looks like this CES could be a hot one for Motorola. Can you believe it was only a bit more than a year ago that Motorola introduced the Droid? Now it has a whole lineup of incredibly hot phones, and CES seems like a perfect time for the beating of chests in front of an industry. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha just went on record during a keynote at the Credit Suisse 2010 Technology Conference, saying Motorola will be entering the tablet space 'in the near future.' He also said that he sees both 7-inch and 10-inch tablets as viable sizes -- something that seems perfectly logical to us, and might jibe with how we initially heard of Motorola's "Stingray" tablet as a smaller device, but later heard it was a full 10-incher upgradeable to LTE. This all follow's on Sanjay's statement in September that Motorola wouldn't be joining in on the tablet space until next year, a year which is rapidly approaching. Meanwhile, Sanjay also confirmed that Motorola would have 4G devices "early" next year, which also sounds like a CES hint to us, though it might just be 4G modems and hotspots at the outset. Still, bring it on.

Old Navy switching to Apple’s checkout system?

by Aazar Shahzad

If you’ve ever shopped at a brick and mortar Apple store (which I’d say is a pretty safe assumption if you’re reading this site), then you’ve probably also seen their fancy iPod touch checkout system: EasyPay. These mobile checkouts have allowed Apple to take up less room for checkout counters by being able to handle everything on the iPhone, from card swiping to signing. The point of sale system is not only great for Apple, it could be great for retailers in general. Imagine walking into a store and never having to wait in line again because every employee is armed with a small iPod touch and is capable of checking you out from anywhere in the store. Sweet, ‘ey?

Well, that may be becoming closer to a reality. Gap-owned Old Navy stores are reportedly piloting a rebranded form of this technology from Apple to be known as ZipCheck. This point of sale system is the same that Apple uses in their checkout store but has obviously been changed to work with Old Navy’s backend. It’s worth noting that this news is coming around the holiday season. This could mean that Old Navy is pretty trustful and serious about this technology as they are going to be having a lot more transactions than usual over the next month or so.

Polaroid's CES 2011 teaser hints at instant photography's rebirth

Technically speaking, Polaroid returned to instant photography earlier this year with the introduction of the 300, but we all know that thing was forgotten as soon as it was revealed. The famed camera outfit -- despite being a shell of its former self -- just dropped a luscious teaser into our inbox to let us know about an exclusive event it'll be hosting at CES 2011 next month. The image you see above is severely distorted, but we did so to give you a better idea of what's truly to come -- unless that's an outrageously shaped projector, we're guessing it's some sort of next generation instant camera. The slot on the bottom definitely helped push us over the edge, but if you'd rather cover the whole thing in mystique and guess for yourself, the un-doctored (er, unmutilated) teaser is just after the break. Oh, and we'll be bringing you the blow-by-blow on what this thing really is on January 6th, hopefully with Outkast blaring in the background.

Apple's numpad-less compact wired keyboard gets discontinued, few tears are shed

The ultraslim, metallic, chiclet-styled obsession all began back in mid-2007, but a revised iMac in March of 2009 delivered something else: a chopped-down version of the Apple Keyboard. If you'll recall, that one dropped the numeric keypad and gained two peripheral USB sockets, making it one of the more compact desktop keyboards on the market. Just shy of its second birthday, it seems as if the supply chain overlords in Cupertino have seen fit to discontinue it, though a number of e-tailers still seem to have stock for the moment. If you're dead-set on snagging one (we know, stocking's aren't that long), Amazon can make your day for $46.99, but we'd probably pony up the extra $3 necessary to bring one home with a number pad on the right.

Apple Ending Free iPhone 4 Case Program Sept 30

September is here and as promised Apple has re-evaluated their iPhone case initiative. The verdict: “we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010″. But they’ll still give you one if you complain.

Of course, if they thought their antenna design flaw was so small, why give free bumpers to everyone at all? And why keep giving them to those who ask for it?

There’s a good answer to these two questions, and you are all smart enough to realise it
